How Social Media Keywords Work

Social platforms increasingly index the words in your posts. Descriptive phrasing beats hashtag volume on every platform we cover.

Search moved into the feed

People now type questions into Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest the same way they type them into a search engine. That means the first line of your caption is doing a job it never used to do: telling both a person and a matching system what the post is about.

Write that first line as though the hashtags did not exist. If the post still makes sense and names its subject plainly, you have done the important part.

Hashtags: fewer, more specific

A generic hashtag places your post in an ocean; a specific one places it in a pond where you can be seen. Mixing a few broad tags with several narrow, descriptive ones is a reasonable default across platforms.

Nobody outside a platform can see how many people currently follow or search a tag in real time. Any tool showing you live popularity for hashtags is estimating. Ours does not estimate — it formats, deduplicates and keeps you inside platform limits.

  • Instagram: descriptive subject, niche, format and location tags.
  • TikTok: spoken and on-screen words matter as much as the caption.
  • LinkedIn: three to five professional tags, no more.
  • Pinterest: treat descriptions as searchable text, not decoration.

Consistency beats cleverness

Using the same vocabulary across your captions, video titles and site content compounds. It teaches both audiences and systems what you are about. Pick your terms deliberately and reuse them.
